Shotguns in Colonial Marine use

The Marine Corps has a long and illustrious history of using combat shotguns dating as far back to its blue water navy days. The manually-operated smoothboore repeater shotgun continues as a key element of the Colonial Marine armoury with many weapons being virtually unchanged from antecedents developed as long ago as the early twentieth century. The solid slug still remains one of the most effective ways to breech a door. While OO-buckshot is a highly effective close quarters weapon, especially within the confined spaces and among the sensitive equipment found aboard starships. Attempts to replace the simpler shotgun with more sophisticated grenade launchers firing canister and flechette loads has so far met with limited success. Therefore it is expected shotguns will remain integral to operatons at least until the end of the current century.
